City calls on Mitchells Plain residents to comment on walk and cycle lanes

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate is calling on residents from Mitchells Plain to comment on plans to build walking and cycle lanes along 15 roads in Eastridge and Westridge and surrounds. These new facilities will be universally accessible, meaning people with special needs and those in wheelchairs will be able to access the walking lanes with ease; and the infrastructure will improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. All residents, and interested and affected parties are encouraged to comment on the proposed non-motorised transport infrastructure, otherwise known as universally accessible walking and cycle lanes. The participation process commences today, and comments must be submitted by 28 May 2023.
‘We are also hosting an information day for residents where they can ask our officials questions, and view maps of where the work is to take place. Walking and cycle lanes are extremely important to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. We know from our own research that thousands of Capetonians walk to their destinations and we have a responsibility to do all we can to make sure they can do so safely. The walking lanes will have dropped kerbs and other features to improve access for those with special needs. I encourage residents to make their voices heard during this public participation process, and to submit comments,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The roads where the proposed walking and cycle lanes will be built are as follows:
• New Eisleben Road from Baden Powell Drive to Heinz Park Drive
• Highlands Drive from Swartklip Road to Weltevreden Parkway
• AZ Berman Drive from the R300 to Highlands Drive
• Westpoort Drive from Park Avenue to AZ Berman Drive
• Dagbreek Avenue from Morgenster Road to Park Avenue
• Park Avenue from Dagbreek Avenue to Westpoort Drive
• 1st Avenue from Imperial Street to Trampoline Street
• Imperial Street from 1st Avenue to Alpine Street
• Katdoring Street from Spine Road to Imperial Street
• Alpine Street from Morgenster Road to Spine Road
• Tafelberg Street from Spine Road to Swartklip Road
• Langeberg Avenue from Tafelberg Street to AZ Berman Drive
• Kilimanjaro Street from Yellow Wood Street to AZ Berman Drive
• Yellow Wood Street from Kapteinsklip to Spine Bridge
• Sentinel Street from Yellow Wood Street to Paulsberg Street
The City will host an information day where residents can ask questions:
